It might not seem like it, but a lot of thought goes into choosing which new stroller you should buy, so today we are going to take a look at the eight questions you need to answer before buying a stroller.
How much research have I done?
Are you happy with the amount of research you have done on your chosen stroller? Would you be able to sell the product to a friend if it came to it? If you have answered no to either of those questions then it could be time to get that notepad back out!
Do I like the design of the stroller?
Companies spend a lot of time ensuring that the design of their stroller is perfect, but this does not mean it is the right design for you. If you don’t like the color or the way the handlebar has been laid out, you should probably keep looking.
Now, I know that this is not actually as important as some of the other more practical elements of a stroller, but this is still a big thing for some people. An awful lot of parents would not be seen dead with an ugly stroller, so if this sounds like you then pay attention to the design of the stroller. Some parents will be happy to walk down the street with a luminous yellow and green stroller, but others definitely not!
Does the stroller have all of the features I need it to?
Pneumatic tires, adjustable handlebars and sun canopies are all regular features on strollers, but does the stroller you have been looking at includes everything you need it to? You may need the wheels to be bigger due to the rough terrain you walk on, or perhaps you would like a bigger storage area under the stroller, but you need to remember to think in the long term when it comes to which features the stroller has.
Is the stroller big enough for my needs?
This one should be a given, but it is something many people overlook when they are deciding on a stroller. This becomes all the more prevalent when it comes to double strollers as there are twice as many children to fit in! You should make note of the size of both of the children that will be going into the stroller, as it is all well and good if it’s the right size for one, but if the other child has their legs poking out the bottom there will be tiny sized trouble!
Does the stroller have any points which could be improved?
Companies are quick to shout about all of the amazing things that their strollers can do, but has your research unearthed anything that could be made a little better? Maybe it is something as small as a clip that it stiff, or maybe it’s something larger like a wheel that falls off after 4 months of use. Whichever it is, you should check out the bad as well as the good.
How much does it cost?
Chances are you did not need much reminding of this one, but what kind of article would this be if we didn’t discuss the price! The world of strollers can be a confusing one with a whole host of technical terms being bandied about, but you should ensure that you do the proper research to really get the most from your money.
There is nothing worse than parting with a lot of cash only to find that the stroller you have bought is not suitable to your needs, so spend a little time as well as money when looking for the right stroller. This is a market in which you get what you pay for, so if you are willing to stretch that extra little bit to get the best out there then why not do it!
Is this really the stroller for me?
This final question is one which you will know the answer to after answering the rest of the questions above. This is a product which you will be using for a long time to come so it’s a purchase you need to get right. If you have any doubts, we recommend not buying that stroller and going back to the drawing board! There is the right one out there for you, you just need to dig a little to find it.
This is something you may not have thought of, but you need to check the tires.
When you stop to think about it, the tires are one of the most important parts of any stroller. They are the parts that get pounded day in and day out, so they should really be at the front of your mind. Check the quality of the tires pneumatic is your best bet, but if this isn’t available you should still ask yourself whether the tires will be up to the job.
A tandem stroller or a side by side stroller?
I know the ultimate question that keeps rearing its ugly head (if you are looking for a double stroller) is whether to invest in a tandem or side-by-side stroller. My goal is to break down the most important features that you need to keep in mind when making your decision. Hopefully, I will be able to narrow the decision for you.
Undoubtedly, the biggest different between these two types of double strollers is the design. More specifically, the seating arrangements of the two strollers. The side-by-side version (as the name so eloquently points out) allows your children to sit directly next to each other. If you want your children to bond while strolling, this accomplishes that quite well. However, I am sure you figured this out, this means it’s a lot wider. The tandem version, on the contrary, sits one child in front of the other. This makes it extremely compact and that’s often its key selling point. Unfortunately, this means your kids won’t be able to interact with each other.
The design really comes down to personal preference, but I can assure you that when we start talking about girth there is one clear winner: the tandem stroller. What’s so cool is that they are usually no wider than a single stroller, making them incredibly easy to store away. As I have already pointed out, side-by-side double strollers are anything but compact. Most of the time they are so wide that they can’t fit in traditionally sized elevators. This becomes a serious issue if you live in an apartment and are not located on the first floor. Also, they can be a pain in the butt to transport.
I am just going to assume that because of the compactness, you think the tandem stroller will win this category. Well, what if I told you that the side-by-side double strollers have better movability than the tandem ones? How do I know this? A test was conducted in Consumers Report and they tried to figure out which double stroller was easiest to maneuver. The data revealed that among several models of strollers, the side-by-side strollers were the easiest to push. This is largely thanks to the side-by-side seating distributing the weight better than the competition.
The Bottom Line
I don’t believe that there is a clear cut winner here. To be perfectly honest, your decision will come down to what you are looking for. I know this sounds utterly vague, but it’s the truth. Let me explain. If you have kids that are nearly the same weight and age (or twins), and you want them to interact with one another and want the easiest push possible then you should invest in a side-by-side stroller.
However, if you want a very compact design, one of your children to be sitting higher than the other and more standard accessories (such as baskets and child trays as tandem strollers tend to be better in this category) then you should spend your money on a tandem stroller.
