From the time your little one is born, you want to make absolutely certain that his time spent in the car is both safe and comfortable. As your child grows, so does his needs for a car seat. We understand the importance of having a car seat that will keep your child properly restrained for as long as possible, and we’re ready to help. Here are four toddler car seats that we highly recommend, so that you can have a better understanding of the options available for you.
Top Car Seats for Toddlers
Britax ClickTight Convertible Car Seat
Our first choice is made by Britax. This is a great seat because it’s a “convertible” seat, meaning this seat grows with your child. It starts out as an infant car seat, and then as your child grows, the car seat changes. This car seat can be used as both a rear-facing seat and then turn to face forward.
For the safest ride possible, you’ll want to keep your child rear-facing unThe downside to this car seat is that it is extremely heavy, and the LATCH installations are limited because of the weight limits. However, because this car seat is heavy, it means it’s extremely safe.
We recommend this car seat due in part to its safety features, along with the fact that it’s one that you’ll have for years, so you don’t have to worry about buying a new seat when your baby is no longer able to remain in his infant seat.til he reaches the maximum height and weight limit.
The biggest safety feature on this particular car seat is its ClickTight system. The ClickTight system is available on the Britax line of car seats, and it is made as an added safety feature to ensure that your child is secure while in his car seat. This system helps to simplify the installation process of securing the car seat into your vehicle by using the seat belt itself instead of the anchors that are part of the LATCH system.
With the ClickTight system, it locks and tensions the seat belt simultaneously, which results in a secure and tight installation, which is exactly what you want when you’re securing your child into the car. Safety is your number one concern, after all, which is what makes this car seat one of the best around.
First Runner-Up: Chicco NextFit Convertible Car Seat
Our first runner-up is also a convertible car seat. Again, more “bang for your buck” here, as this seat grows with your child. This car seat is rear facing from five to 40 pounds, and is then a forward-facing car seat from 22 to 65 pounds.
It’s recommended that all children ride in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the age of two, or until they reach the height and weight limits of the particular car seat they’re riding in. The Chicco car seat has an eight-year lifespan, so you’re sure to have it for many years. This car seat is also FAA approved to be used in airplanes.
This is a great seat because it comes with a system similar to the ClickTight system, called the SuperCinch system. This system makes installation possible for even those who are not used to installing car seats, such as grandparents. The other features of the Chicco car seat include the following:
- Two crotch-strap buckle positions
- Two-position chest clip
- EPS foam lines that absorb energy on both the head wings and the sides
- Nine recline positions to achieve the right riding angle along with comfort
- Six height positions for the seat’s harness
Chicco is also a brand associated with safety in children’s product, which is another reason this comes in as first runner-up.
Second Runner-Up: Evenflo SureRide
Another name brand associated with baby product is Evenflo. This car seat is our second-runner up, and it’s yet again another convertible seat. This car seat is safety and comfort with budget-conscious families in mind.
The features of this car seat include a five to 40-pound limit for the rear-facing position, with a 22 to 65 pound limit for forward-facing features. There are six sets of harness slots, and three crotch strap positions for your child’s ultimate comfort. This fits small newborns with ease and is lightweight for easy transferring from vehicle to vehicle. This seat is also FAA approved for airplane transportation.
The LATCH installation is easy enough, but reviews have noted that moving the strap from the forward-facing path to rear-facing path is not easy. This seat is on the inexpensive side, so it does not come with a specialty locking system. Still, it’s safe enough and sturdy enough, making it one we definitely recommend.
Third Runner-Up: Graco Size4Me
Our third runner-up is the Size4Me car seat. This is named because of the fact that it fits smaller newborns, essentially “cloning” itself to the baby’s size. However, we’re here to review toddler seats, and this again is another convertible seat that will be with you for awhile. This seat is made for children ranging in four to 40 pounds in the rear-facing position, and 20 to 65 pounds front-facing. Its lifespan is about 7 years, so another car seat that should be with you for awhile.
The downside to this particular model is that it can be hard to get some slack out of the harness due to the lock-off feature, and it has minimal padding. All in all, still a great car seat and it’s why we’re adding it to our list.
While all of the above car seats are excellent, we’re still going with the Britax car seat. It’s one we feel is the absolute safest toddler seat around, and you’ll no doubt feel confident that your child is riding in not only one of the safest, one of the most comfortable as well.
